This is the way it used to be!
At one time, the British government warned drivers not to break the rules about towing that were already in place. Stating that doing so might result in a fine of up to £1,000, a driving suspension, and up to 6 points on your licence
The only exception would be if you were being watched. You must have been accompanied in such a case by a person who is at least 21 years old, has had “BE” on their driver’s licence for three years, and has plainly visible L plates on both their automobile and trailer.
What is a BE? Caravan Battery Buyers
If the holder has passed a vehicle and trailer driving test, the BE category currently appears on driver’s licences. The DVLA wants to modify the law to eliminate the requirement for this exam and require the category on all new photocard licences.
Beginning on January 1, 1997, drivers who passed their test are subject to stricter towing regulations until the rules are changed.
It is anticipated that new regulations will take effect soon, even if their initial implementation date was set for November 15, 2021. For additional information, keep an eye on the gov.uk website.
The “National Standard for Driving Automobiles and Light Vans” will offer guidance on the abilities and knowledge needed to tow. while people who want to start driving a car or trailer are also advised to take training with a driving instructor.

So it’s not often that some good news about the dreaded COVID pandemic comes along! However, I have just read about the fact that caravan and trailer owners will no longer have to take a separate test to tow up to 3500 kg.
The idea comes from the government. allowing test centres more room to test up to 30,000 more HGV drivers. Importantly, this will mean that passenger car drivers who passed their test after January 1st, 1997, can tow caravans and trailers with a weight up to 3,500kg from the Autumn of 2021 (this year)
