I must admit that as a 75 year old guy, then new things are not easy to pick up and learn about. Especially, when spending a life time with lead acid batteries and their derivatives.
In recent years then lithium-ion batteries have become a name on everybody’s lips. We can now find them everywhere and on all sorts of appliances. As I am writing this article I can see some Different Lithium technology batteries products on my desk.

Chinese suppliers are offering to sell me all these Different Lithium technology batteries, but to be truthful I don’t have a clue where to start. Some of the battery manufacturers are using lithium to make copies of the popular car battery part numbers. So instead of lead acid we would have a lithium battery.
Much lighter in weight of course but how about charging? Would lead acid charger be compatible? Then there is the huge price difference, would consumers be prepared to pay this! I am not sure.
Here is some information about charging difference. Although this is only the “tip of the ice burgh”. 13.3-13.4 volts is the voltage that is maintained by a lithium LiFePO4 battery. Hence, that has been charged to its maximum capacity of 12 volts.
The voltage of its lead acid relative will be approximately 12.6-12.7 volts.
When charged to 20% capacity, Different Lithium technology batteries will maintain a voltage close to 13 volts, whereas the voltage held by a lead acid battery at the same capacity will be approximately 11.8 volts.
As can be seen, we are working within a very small voltage window when dealing with lithium, one that is less than 0.5V when the capacity is at 80%.
