Modern mobility aids have enabled disabled and elderly people to become more mobile. In days gone by, these unfortunate people would have had to spend their days sitting in a chair or even lying in their bed all day.
In fact, I clearly remember my grandma on my mother’s side. As she aged, her “arthritis” became steadily worse. especially in her knees and feet. I remember her having to go into an elderly facility in Dewsbury, where I live.
She could not walk without the aid of a “zimmer frame”. Mavis was confined to her small bedroom for hours on end. I was only young at the time, and in the summer we were allowed to take her out into the fresh air in a regular hospital-type wheelchair.
This was in the UK in the late fifties and early sixties.
Invented in 1968
Something had to be done to help the millions of people who were in the same trouble as my grandma Mavies. Indeed, surely enough, an American plumber from Bridgeport, in America invented the very first power-operated mobility scooter in 1968. Unfortunately, he also had a reaction and was very ill with “multiple Sclerosis”.
His name was Allan Thieme, and he spent many a night building a yellow scooter for the ill member of his family. Incredibly, the scooter could travel at about 3 miles per hour, and he affectionately called it “The Amigo”.
From its humble beginnings, the Amigo was to be the start of a multi-million dollar industry in the coming years. The Amigo became a brand name that can still be bought today. A great article written by Stephanie Book appeared in “Timeline” and goes in great detail for those who are interested.

However, it is only in recent times that I have been involved with the batteries for mobility scooters. Most of my battery life has seen very little change. with the “lead acid free flowing” battery at the forefront.
Also, there were very few mobility scooters in the small town that I grew up in. People would build their own versions, powered by a small gasoline engine. However, the beginning of the eighties saw an improvement in battery technology.
Along came a new boy, the Lithium battery.
It is widely thought that this battery was invented for American military aircraft. AGM and gel batteries are completely sealed and can be fitted on any side. This flexibility fit in well with the motor scooter manufacturers, and far better designs came out as a result.
