The Ultimate Resource for Home Energy Storage Batteries
Learn How to Choose the Best Home Battery System Today!
So, things have improved since I first decided to have a solar battery bank, back in the day! In the end I decided to buy a standalone unit. This came with the batteries, which were 6 x spiral AGM batteries from Leoch batteries.
The unit was fitted by a professional as I do not have any electrical expertise. The system has worked now for about six years. The only problem that I encountered was that I had to have the batteries changed as one of them had overcharged and had a blown battery casing.
However with the rising cost of electricity and also people looking for cleaner, more cost-effective ways to power their homes. Then residential energy storage has exploded in popularity in recent years.
There are many different battery options available, making it difficult to select the best one. In this article, we’ll take a look at some of the best battery options for residential energy storage, so you can make an educated choice for your own home.
Lead-Acid Batteries, Part 1
Lead-acid batteries have been widely used for many years. This type of battery was easily affordable. Flooded (or wet cell) and sealed are the two most common types (valve-regulated lead-acid or VRLA). Gel batteries are also in this class but they are on the expensive side.
Both the other choices are dependable and inexpensive. However, one will require less upkeep than the other. More, maintenance is required for flooded batteries than for sealed ones. Depth of discharge is also better on the VRLA sealed batteries
Lithium-ion Batteries, Part 2
So the latest battery type that is now being used is the Lithium-ion or Li-ion battery. Energy density, and charging speed are all improved with lithium-ion technology.
Also companies that make standalone units have started to use this battery technology. One big difference between the lead acid and the Li-ion batteries is the weight. Li-ion batteries are far lighter and easier to handle and manoeuvre.
As far as I can see though then as an alternative to lead-acid battery products, lithium iron phosphate batteries (LiFePO4) have greater energy density and service life. Suitable for use in any field. You can also tailor to specific requirements.
The LiFePO4 also have an improved discharge and charge efficiency, and as I have said they are lightweight and extremely safe
Therefore, homeowners searching for a reliable means of storing energy will find these characteristics to be favourable. Both lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) and lithium nickel manganese cobalt oxide (NMC) are popular chemistries for lithium-ion batteries (LiNMC). While LiNMC batteries provide a higher energy density, LiFePO4 batteries are more stable and last longer.
Third Section Sodium-Ion Batteries-Home Energy Storage Batteries
I must confess that I am not up to speed with some of thee new technologies and am being helped by other peoples work. Home energy storage using sodium-based batteries, such as sodium-sulphur (NaS) and sodium-nickel chloride (NaNiCl), is a developing field.
These batteries can withstand high temperatures and deliver substantial amounts of power. Their abundant and non-toxic materials make them environmentally friendly as well. Their high operating temperature is the biggest drawback because it necessitates insulation and cooling systems, which increases the system’s complexity and cost.
Section 5: Buying a Household Battery-Home Energy Storage Batteries
Cost, in my opinion is the major faction! Like anything else in life everything has got a cost limit. Spending a few thousand pounds on the new technology batteries will seem like too much to many cash strapped customers.
Twin post leisure batteries are at the moment a good choice for Home Energy Storage Batteries, just entering the world of solar storage. Lithium can cost several thousands of pounds when compared to their lead acid counterparts.
This type of investment has a long payback time. Although their electric bills will be lower, it is still difficult plan and invest so much money upfront without immediate results.
