So, recently, I got the chance to deliver an urgent customer request. It was to be a Lucas AGM car battery. Our customer was visiting the area as a tourist and suffered a flat battery on his car. The car was fitted with a 110 start-stop battery, which had failed him.

Subsequently, his holiday cottage was booked for one more day. Hence, he needed a Lucas AGM Car battery urgently. After contacting a couple of local garages, the guy took the advice of a local pub landlord and contacted us to help resolve his problem.

After speaking to our battery manager, I then volunteered to take the Lucas AGM Car battery to Wensleydale, home of Yorkshire cream cheese.

Wensleydale cheese has a long history of production in the Wensleydale region of North Yorkshire, England.

The cheese is known for its crumbly texture and mild, slightly tangy flavour. It is traditionally made from cow’s milk and is often enjoyed on its own or in dishes such as cheese platters, sandwiches, and salads.

Wensleydale cheese gained widespread popularity after being featured in the British television show Wallace and Gromit, where it was famously paired with crackers. Today, it continues to be a beloved cheese, both in the UK and internationally.

The cheese was first mentioned in the 12th century and was made by Cistercian monks who lived in the area.

The cheese was traditionally made from ewe’s milk and was known for its crumbly texture and mild, slightly tangy flavour. In the 19th century, cheese’s popularity declined as farmers began to switch to producing cow’s milk instead of ewe’s milk.

In the early 20th century, a cheesemaker named Joseph Harris began producing Wensleydale cheese using traditional methods and locally sourced cow’s milk. His cheese gained recognition and helped to revive the Wensleydale cheese industry.

In the 1980s, a creamery was opened in the town of Hawes by the Wensleydale Dairy, This creamery still produces the Wensleydale cheese today.

In recent years, Wensleydale cheese has become popular as an ingredient in baked goods as well as being eaten on its own. It’s also a traditional cheese served with Christmas pudding or mince pies.

Like most Yorkshiremen, I love my beloved Dales and will visit there as much as I can, for whatever reason.

Great day for a trip to the Dales.

Of course, when I heard about it, I soon volunteered, and off I went on the two-hour journey to deliver the Lucas AGM car battery to a town near Wensleydale. This also brings back memories of summer holiday trips to youth hostels.

Tirelessly, we would walk around fifteen miles a day to a previously planned “youth hostel,” taking us all over the Yorkshire dales. No cell phones or computers to keep the kids of the 1960s entertained? Just some fresh air and good times with our friends

I remember this particular day because the weather was hot and we were heading for Hawes from Malham. After descending down a hill into a valley, a few of us were found to be lagging behind. We were messing about in streams of cold mountain water, trying to keep cool in the heat.

Taken short cut

The rest of the kids were well ahead and had taken a tarmac road about two miles from our destination, “Hawes Youth Hostel.” We entered the tarmac road and could not believe it when an old truck pulled up and asked us if we wanted a lift. The old farmer was a pleasant guy, and there was no reason not to trust him.

We soon flew past our friends a few miles down the road and were dropped off ahead of them. The teachers were furious, and we had to do the evening cleaning chores at the youth hostel that evening.

Great days and great memories! Today’s roads are much busier as millions of tourists flock to the Dales every summer.

However, getting back down to earth, I delivered the Lucas AGM Car Battery to a happy customer, and a great day was had reminiscing about the “good old days” and the Wensleydale Cheese Creamery.
