I’m happy to say that this Lucas battery delivery will go to a motorhome owner in the small town of Blyth. just off the A1 motorway. Of course, this leisure battery delivery was one of many in the same area. around the Rotherham and Sheffield areas of South Yorkshire and Nottinghamshire. Pleasantly, the day was a sunny one, and a good day was ahead.
My journey took me from Maltby, where I delivered an LE096B Lucas EFB battery to a local resident. The next delivery was to Blyth. The road is very windy and flanked by beautiful countryside. This is a road that I have travelled many times. So, I use the road as a short cut to take me from the A1 to the M1 further north.
Passing wonderful Roche Abbey
So, a couple of miles on, you have to pass the sad but wonderful ruins of Roche Abbey! Of course, the abbey is now in a state of disrepair and stands as it did hundreds of years ago. Tourists in this area should take a diversion and visit this well-preserved site.
Visitors will see this fine example of “Gothic architecture“. especially the church part of this wonderful abbey. The gatehouse, which was originally a “Cistercian monastery,” is one of the oldest parts of the original structure to have survived the years.
So, an account of the abbey’s destruction that has survived is one of the most important sources about the destruction of a monastery. In the 18th century, “Capability” Brown’s landscaping was his first attempt to make a beautiful ruin.
According to “English Heritage” the downfall of Roche Abbey took place in 1538.
So, a local rector in the parish of Wickersley, a nearby neighbourhood, saw the event happen. Michael Sherwood was indeed the rector and lived from 1535 to 1610. His father and uncle were witnesses to the destruction when he was a child. Of course, he was a child at the time.
A local mob of people were said to ransack and steel to many of the valuable objects ! Very sad but true !
Having stopped for a look, I carried on to the next delivery in Blyth of the LX31 Giant Boat and Leisure battery. Finally, Roche Abbey is well worth a visit if you are in the Yorkshire area.
